Hallie Todd Studios' mission statement is simple: we provide effective and relevant on-camera acting training, and cast our films from our student base. Our film The Mooring will be premiering in Berlin this February. In class, we work with our students on skills which we, as filmmakers, want in our actors. We know our students’ strengths and weaknesses, and how far they can go. There is a mutual trust that comes from working together in the classroom. On a film set, time is money. As film actors, it is essential to be able to deliver a performance with an understanding of what the director and the camera need from you. The ability to relax in front of an entire crew, with their equipment poised, and expensive minutes ticking away is integral to great film acting. How does an actor arrive at that moment, confident and prepared? With practice. We often hear about the different requirements of theatre and film acting. What is the difference? It is the technical requirements that separate them. Both mediums require commitment and honesty. Both require research and focus. Both require discipline and imagination. Our philosophy: It is a myth that film acting is “real” and that stage acting is “unreal”. The truth is that both types are at the same time, real and unreal, but should always be realistic representations appropriate to the physical distance between the actor and his/her audience. For example, with stage acting, if the action is several yards away from the audience, it’s necessary to “abstract” the performance so it can translate equally to the people seated in first row and those seated in the balcony. But with film, the audience (the camera) may be only inches from an actor’s face. At Hallie Todd Studios, we teach acting, with the emphasis on film acting. Why? Because this is Los Angeles.
